Feijoas

FEIJOAS, aka PINEAPPLE GUAVAS

Ripe Feijoas have a tropical aroma and juicy flesh. Crystallized Feijoa blossoms, available in late May and early June, make a striking decoration for wedding cakes.

Feijoas are native to South America. The blossoms taste sweet and peppery, and are showy, with thick, silvery pink petals and red stamens. The fruit, which matures in autumn, is green, oval, and varies in size from that of a small plum to that of a chicken egg. It has a sweet, aromatic flavor. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly gritty, opaque flesh nearer the skin. The fruit drops when ripe and at its fullest flavor, but may be picked from the tree prior to the drop to prevent bruising.

Season: October - November

Size: 6 to 12 fruits per pound

Suggested uses:cut in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon for a delicious healthy snack. Add to fruit salads, muddle in drinks, use to flavor ice cream or sorbet.

Shelf life: Keeps for 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.
